University of South Florida's College of Marine Science Education & Outreach Programs mission is ‘to successfully integrate scientific research and pre-college education to enhance science learning'. The GLOBE protocol and emphasis on environmental science supports this mission.
We plan to work with schools and teachers primarily Pinellas, Manatee, Sarasota, Hillsborough, Pasco, Citrus, and Polk counties. Our main focus will be to work with students in grades 3-8. We have also identified several goals for our GLOBE partnership which are to expand Florida environmental literacy, environmental science process skills of Florida youth, and equip teachers with tools to advance environmental literacy. It is our hope that the GLOBE protocol will grow to incorporate ocean environmental data.
We are working to establish relationships with the USF St. Petersburg Environmental Sciences undergraduate students (as part of service learning hours), several environmental science clubs in regional schools, St. Petersburg College science education program for pre-service teachers, and the GK-12 OCEANS teaching fellowship program at USF College of Marine Science.
