Often times we still get nervous for the first day of classes. No matter if it’s as a child walking down the intimidating halls of school or as an adult wondering if the teacher will be good and the books not so expensive, those first moments or even days of school often can be daunting. As instructors, it’s our job to engage our students and make a good first impression so we can restart the curious minds in our class. For my case, the goal is to guide my student’s learning experience using GLOBE resources to better understand the branch of science known as physics.
Today I treated my college students to an outdoor excursion where they were able to learn more about their environment using the GLOBE Observer (GO) app. They were able to utilize their smartphones by collecting data and learning more about the different types of cloud formations that we had this day, which luckily offered a cloudy extravaganza of various types of high, mid and low level clouds. Along with an outdoor lab that they conducted in groups, the GO app provided an extra dimension of awareness on the physical processes that exist in our atmosphere. They were introduced to future topics that would include thermodynamics and fluid dynamics, and would learn how the GO app and the data they collected would help them identify those physical properties in greater detail.
All in all, introducing GLOBE on the first day of class not only provided a needed icebreaker for the students, but it helped them understand that learning physics is more than just equations on a board. It allowed them to explore how nature works and how we can begin to peer into awesomeness of science.

¡Bienvenido de nuevo! Muchas veces todavía nos ponemos nerviosos el primer día de clases. No importa si es como un niño caminando por los intimidantes pasillos de la escuela o como un adulto preguntándose si el maestro será bueno y los libros no son tan caros, esos primeros momentos o incluso los días de escuela a menudo pueden ser desalentadores. Pudieron utilizar sus teléfonos inteligentes recopilando datos y aprendiendo más sobre los diferentes tipos de formaciones de nubes que tuvimos este día, que afortunadamente ofrecieron una extravagancia nublada de varios tipos de nubes de alto, medio y bajo nivel. Junto con un laboratorio al aire libre que llevaron a cabo en grupos, la aplicación GO proporcionó una dimensión adicional de conciencia sobre los procesos físicos que existen en nuestra atmósfera.
