Participate in the Surface Temperature Field Campaign Dec 1 - Dec 31 and receive a $50 stipend!
Field campaigns are focused data collection events, coordinated in partnership with a scientist or agency, seeking very specific kinds of data.
Every educator who enters a surface temperature data set* by Dec 31, 2016 will receive a $50 stipend. Surface temperature is a simple protocol to do. You still have time to request funds from a mini-grant and order the infrared thermometers if you act soon!

*A data set is 10 readings taken at one time, 5 meters apart, on two different surfaces, usually grass and pavement.
February Site Setup Stipend (new sites only). Selecting your protocol and setting up your site is often the most challenging part of data collection. Take some time this winter and get ready for spring and fall ecology units by selecting your protocol and setting up your site in the database.
Earth Day April Data Entry Stipend Collect data in April and report by May 5 to receive an Earth Day Stipend.
Visualizing and Interpreting Earth Systems Data. Huron. Math and Science Teachers Conference (requires additional registration): Saturday, Feb 4 11:30am
Elementary GLOBE Sunday. Pierre. Feb 5 11am - 4pm. This is part of a two day workshop combined with Project Learning Tree (Saturday). Stipends available.
GLOBE Learning Expedition June. Dates TBA. This 3 day/2 night back country excursion will immerse you in field studies. We will kayak and camp along one of South Dakota’s rivers while taking GLOBE measurements along the way. New and experienced GLOBE educators welcome.
NEW: GLOBE Mini Learning Expedition. Primitive camping not your thing? Join us for a two day professional development opportunity but sleep in a bed at night. The first day we are in class, the second we are in the field.
NEW and ONGOING: Webinars
Participate in a webinar and you can get a contact hours certificate for two hours!
To receive the certificate, view the webinar and write a short reflection (four to five paragraphs). Email it to me (annelewis@sd-discovery.org)
To help you write the reflection, think of the four R’s:
Recall or review the content.
Relate something in the webinar to your current understandings or practice.
Remark on something interesting or challenging presented in the webinar.
Revise any previous conceptions or understanding because of something you learned in the webinar.
You will probably not use more than 2 of the four R’s in your reflection.
Please note: These reflections may be shared with the webinar organizers and GLOBE staff. In order to make the reflections useful to others, please use the rubric.

Your reflection should include:
A short introduction with where and what you teach.
The name of the webinar you watched and the date you watched it.
A summary of the webinar content (the first R).
One other R.

A science research symposia for students to present their GLOBE research will be held in 2017 for teachers and students in US GLOBE region 6. Dates will be decided SOON. Start your students on research projects using GLOBE protocols.
Annual Meeting
GLOBE’s annual meeting will be held in New Haven CT, July 30 - Aug 4. Teachers and students are encouraged to attend. Students will have an opportunity to work with students from around the globe (and around GLOBE) on a student research experience. Email me if you think you might be interested.
