March is National Reading Month in the U.S., which presents the perfect opportunity for learners to explore NASA reading material on a more personal level. The resources highlighted on NASA Wavelength - a digital library for educators of all levels - at http://nasawavelength.org/blog/national-reading-month are grade-appropriate reading opportunities that feature engaging and educational science stories and articles. And they can be used anytime – not just in March.
Books highlighted include Elementary GLOBE storybooks with learning activities for children, which you are hopefully already using. Discover books for middle school students like the Think Scientifically series, which include topics such as the Sun and the water cycle, how the tilt of Earth on its axis causes the seasons, and the Sun as Earth’s primary source of energy. EO Kids focuses on articles, images, and maker activities that are based on NASA Earth Observatory news stories. EO Kids topics have connections to GLOBE science and protocols, including fresh water, urban heat islands, ice on Earth, landslides, and more. High school teachers can give their students a front row seat to NASA science through resources and news stories that can support STEM instruction and literacy. The Wavelength blog post links to resources in NASA Wavelength lists – mini collections that anyone can create or copy and customize. To make a copy and personalize any of the Wavelength lists, be sure to first “Log In” or “Register” using the link on the right side of the blue bar found at the top of http://nasawavelength.org. Then click on the link to any of the lists in the blog post at http://nasawavelength.org/blog/national-reading-month and select “Copy list.” You can now add resources to this list and create new lists which you can share.
