GLE Overview and Student Experience
GLE Overview and the Student Experience
GLOBE Learning Expeditions (GLEs) are organized every few years in order to provide students from around the world the opportunity to present their GLOBE research projects to their peers, to GLOBE scientists and the greater GLOBE community. These conferences also provide students with the opportunity to establish friendships and develop collaborative partnerships that will enhance their future GLOBE experiences.
Teachers are provided an opportunity to share innovative ideas and challenges, to attend protocol and related professional development sessions, and to build connections for research efforts between schools.
The 2018 GLE was held in Killarney, Ireland, with a theme of "Mountain, Woods, and Water: Developing a Sense of Place." Student projects for the GLE fit into one of the following categories:
- Environmental Problems and Solutions
- Developing a Sense of Place: Connections between Observations and Measurements across
Spheres - New Technologies and GLOBE
Students were encouraged to submit their projects to the GLOBE International Virtual Science Symposium (IVSS) and use feedback from that to update their projects for the GLE. Projects were due to the IVSS on 1 March 2018.
Student Experience
At the GLE in Ireland, all students were expected to participate in an oral presentation of their GLOBE research (done individually or in student research groups). Students planned an 8-minute presentation with a PowerPoint, Prezi, or other presentation method per project. Students who were planning on attending the GLE but did not have a project were asked to start working on a GLOBE project so it would be ready to present by the time of the GLE.
Students also had the opportunity to share their culture through song, dance, games, and other activities during the GLE Culture Nights. Students were not required to share during the culture events, but they were a wonderful opportunity for students to get to know each other.
In addition to giving presentations and sharing culture, students were also in the field collecting data and learning about Killarney National Park.
